Cover 0 Blitz

Also called: cover 0 blitz

Cover 0 Blitz is a man-coverage scheme with zero deep safeties and an extra pass rusher. Every eligible receiver is matched man-to-man, no one is responsible for deep coverage, and the defense bets it can reach the quarterback before any route has time to develop.

Whether you're scheming in Madden or College Football (CFB), here's what Cover 0 Blitz is, how to recognize it, and how to attack it.

How do you recognize Cover 0 Blitz pre-snap?

Look at safety depth first. In Cover 0, both safeties will be walked up near the line or assigned directly to a back or tight end — nobody is sitting 12 to 15 yards deep. Count the box. If you see more defenders near the line than you have blockers, they are bringing at least one extra rusher. Check corner alignment too. Cover 0 corners typically press at the line rather than playing off, because they have no safety help over the top and need to disrupt timing at the release point. Motion a back or tight end out wide. If a linebacker or safety follows him immediately, that confirms man coverage across the board and tells you the blitz is coming.

What are the weaknesses of Cover 0 Blitz?

No deep safety is the core vulnerability. Any receiver who wins his release and gets behind his corner has nothing but open grass in front of him. Quick crossing routes and rub concepts stress Cover 0 because defenders cannot pass off routes to zone defenders — they must chase through traffic and risk getting picked. The flat is also often exposed. When all defenders are accounting for vertical threats or rushing the passer, swing routes to running backs and hot routes to tight ends underneath can generate easy completions against an overpursuing linebacker. The scheme sacrifices all margin for error on the back end, so one blown assignment or one receiver who beats press coverage turns into a touchdown.

How do you beat Cover 0 Blitz?

Speed up your process before the snap. Cover 0 wins when you hold the ball, so identify your hot route and know where your checkdown is before you take the snap. Bunch formations and compressed sets create natural rub routes that free slot receivers quickly. A quick slant or a smoke screen to the boundary can get the ball out in under two seconds, which neutralizes the extra rusher entirely. If you have a receiver with a clear speed advantage on his corner, a go route or a fade is a one-play answer — press coverage means the corner's back is to the ball on a well-thrown fade. Use play-action sparingly; it slows your release and Cover 0 punishes hesitation.

Why do defenses run Cover 0 Blitz?

Cover 0 is a high-pressure, high-reward call designed to create instant chaos. By committing every defender to either a man assignment or a pass rush lane, the defense eliminates the protection gap between rushed blockers and sends more bodies than the offense can block. Coordinators use it on obvious passing downs, near the goal line, or in late-game situations where they need a stop and are willing to trade the risk of a big play for the chance to force a sack or a quick incompletion. It is also used to test offensive linemen's communication — a complex blitz package can confuse protection assignments and cause free runners even if the base talent matchup does not favor the defense.

Cover 0 Blitz FAQ

What is the difference between Cover 0 and Cover 1?
Cover 1 keeps one safety deep as a centerfield defender while everyone else plays man underneath. Cover 0 removes that safety entirely. Cover 0 is more aggressive with no safety net, while Cover 1 trades one rusher for insurance against the deep ball.
Does Cover 0 Blitz always mean a full blitz?
Not always. Cover 0 just means zero deep safeties. A defense can play Cover 0 with a standard four-man rush, but the scheme is most commonly paired with extra rushers because the freed-up safeties are typically used to add pressure rather than cover additional receivers.
What routes attack Cover 0 Blitz most effectively?
Go routes against press corners, quick slants, rub and pick routes from bunch formations, and swing passes to running backs are the most effective. Anything that gets the ball out fast or creates natural collisions between man defenders beats Cover 0 before the blitz arrives.
Can you audible out of Cover 0 Blitz if the offense shifts?
Defensively, yes — shifting to Cover 1 or Cover 2 is the safe adjustment if the offense motions into a formation that stresses Cover 0. But if the defense is locked in, a pre-snap hot route or a quick bubble screen from the offense can exploit the overcommitment before the defense resets.
Is Cover 0 Blitz effective against the run?
It can be. With extra defenders near the box and no safeties sitting back, Cover 0 loads the front and can stuff inside runs. However, if the offense fakes a pass and cuts outside, there is no deep safety to fill as a run alley defender, making it vulnerable to stretch and perimeter runs.
